ALDI supermarkets raw beef sparks health alert from USDA

A public health alert has been issued for a raw beef product sold at ALDI supermarkets nationwide, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced on Friday.

The alert was issued "due to concerns of a raw beef product that may be contaminated with extraneous material, specifically soft, clear plastic," FSIS stated in a release.

A recall was not requested by the agency because it is no longer to sale, however, FSIS stated the "public health alert to ensure that consumers are aware that this product should not be consumed."

The “USDA choice black angus beef from ALDI, beef for carne picada" was produced on July 25, 2023.

The 1.5-lb. plastic tray package says “Use or Freeze by” date of Aug. 22, 2023, Julian Date 206, and time stamp between 08:43 through 09:23, FDIS stated.

Also the package has an establishment number Est. 85M on the back label.

FSIS received a complaint from a store that stated soft, clear plastic was noticed in the product.

The agency stated that there are no reports of injury or illness, but anyone concerned they consumed the product should contact a healthcare provider.

The UDSA stated it is "concerned that some product may be in consumers’ refrigerators or freezers. Consumers who have purchased this product are urged not to consume them. This product should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase."

Anyone with questions about alert can call 844-419-1574.

For food safety concerns, consumers can call the toll-free USDA Meat and Poultry Hotline at 888-MPHotline (888-674-6854) from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday.
